AirPods Max 2: Same Look, Smarter Inside

After nearly five years, Apple has finally refreshed its premium over-ear headphones with the launch of the AirPods Max 2. While the design remains almost identical to the original model, the real upgrades are happening under the hood.
Apple’s latest headphones now run on the Apple H2 chip, unlocking several new features and performance improvements while maintaining the same premium $550 price tag.

What’s New With AirPods Max 2

1.5x Stronger Noise Cancellation

Apple says the new AirPods Max deliver up to 1.5× stronger Active Noise Cancellation, helping block out more background noise whether you’re traveling, working, or just trying to focus.

New Audio Amplifiers

The updated internal amplifiers improve audio clarity and dynamic range, resulting in cleaner sound and deeper bass.

Powered by the H2 Chip

The biggest upgrade is the addition of Apple’s H2 chip, which powers many of the new intelligent features.

This enables things like:

  • Live Translation for real-time conversations in different languages
  • Camera Remote, allowing you to trigger photos or video recordings from your headphones
  • Improved call quality and voice isolation
  • Smarter adaptive audio features

These features bring the AirPods Max lineup closer to the capabilities already seen in newer AirPods models.

What Didn’t Change

Despite the internal improvements, some things remain the same:

  • The design is virtually unchanged
  • Still built with the same aluminum ear cups and mesh headband
  • Price remains $550

For many people hoping for a lighter redesign or a lower price, this update may feel a bit conservative.

Apple’s Pricing Is Getting Interesting:

One thing that makes this launch particularly interesting is the price.

At $550, the AirPods Max 2 now cost more than Apple’s entry-level laptop, the MacBook Neo, which starts at just $499.

That comparison really puts into perspective how aggressive Apple’s new entry-level Mac pricing is — when a pair of headphones costs more than a full Mac.

Our Take

The AirPods Max 2 aren’t a radical redesign, but they finally bring Apple’s premium headphones up to date internally with the powerful H2 chip and smarter features.

For existing AirPods Max owners, the upgrade might feel incremental. But for anyone entering Apple’s ecosystem for the first time, this could now be the most capable pair of Apple headphones yet.
